On this date, in 1840, 2 U.S. Naval officers filed a salvage suit claiming rights to the schooner, La Amistad and the cargo aboard – 53 slaves. Former President John Quincy Adams represented the slaves, arguing they had the right to mutiny under the circumstances. Anthony Hopkins played Adams in the Oscar award winning picture, Amistad – a great movie for people with interest in the law.
